Al-Rawi Day) Sharjah International Narrators Forum)
In 2001, under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qassimi, Member of the Federal Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, Al-Rawi Day was launched as a permanent annual event for 14 years with local and Gulf participation only. In 2015, after the establishment of the Sharjah Institute for Heritage, Al-Rawi Day was developed to be Sharjah International Narrators Forum, with a wide international participation exceeding 25 countries, in pursuit of spreading and promoting the interest of human treasures in local and international circles to make Sharjah the annual international station for popular heritage lovers of diverse cultures, and a major destination where to celebrate human treasures from all over the world.
Al-Rawi’s program started in a simplified manner in the Department of Culture in Sharjah in 1987, through the Heritage Unit. From the outset, the attention was focused on the local narrator and the exploration of the heritage of the people in the UAE. This enabled Sharjah Institute for Heritage to discover dozens of representatives of this culture. The past years have also witnessed the contributions of these narrators in supporting archives and libraries of folklore and highlighting the local culture of the UAE community and their popular heritage. Over the past years, the Institute has honored about 100 narrators in the successive editions of the forum.
